(more)Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles is a nonprofit governmental institute, which is an overseas branch of the Ministry of Culture of Republic of China (Taiwan). It aims to promote the unique art and culture of Taiwan in the West Coast of North America, seeking to build long-term partnership with major art and culture institutions, organizations, art festivals to showcase film, literature, performing arts, visual arts, comic and animation, design and cultural creative contents from Taiwan.
As a cultural bridge of Taiwan, Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles has been participating in Comic-Con International: San Diego since 2019. This year, featuring the theme “Future Island,” ten original works of science fiction will be presented, each brimming with mystery and promise. Moreover, an online talk will be held to discuss the original Taiwanese animation “Mayfly Island,” which is about a part science-fiction, part environmental apocalypse story set in the near future.
With over 80 years of history, the Taiwanese comic industry has cultivated various local Taiwanese comic artists and slowly nurtured the creation of a unique Taiwanese style, filled with elements of local culture. The Taiwanese government’s efforts to promote the production of cultural content in recent years have also given birth to a golden age of comics, and increasing numbers of Taiwanese titles have been successfully licensed in the West, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia.
